To start with: What is the Sound Barrier? The “sound barrier” refers to the point at which an object travels at the speed of sound, also known as Mach 1. Sound travels as pressure waves through a medium like air, and its speed depends on factors like temperature and altitude. At sea level, the speed of sound is roughly 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 miles per hour). When an object approaches this speed, it encounters a dramatic increase in aerodynamic drag and turbulence—this phenomenon was once thought to be an impenetrable "barrier."

Breaking the Sound Barrier - and making the Shockwaves visible

NASA employed schlieren photography to capture groundbreaking air-to-air images showcasing the interaction of shockwaves generated by T-38 supersonic aircraft

NASA employed schlieren photography to capture the groundbreaking air-to-air images showcasing the interaction of shockwaves generated by two supersonic aircraft flying in close formation. The image features two T-38 jets from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, flying roughly 30 feet apart at speeds exceeding the sound barrier. As they cut through the air, their shockwaves—responsible for the familiar sonic booms heard on the ground—were visually recorded in stunning detail. Originally monochromatic, the image was later colorized to enhance its clarity and impact. This remarkable snapshot was part of a supersonic flight series aimed at deepening our understanding of how shockwaves interact both with the exhaust plumes of aircraft and with one another.

When an aircraft accelerates to Mach 1, it compresses air in front of it, creating a shock wave. This leads to the distinctive “sonic boom” heard when the sound barrier is broken. Pilots report that, from their perspective, the transition itself is smooth—they simply fly faster. However, reaching that speed requires advanced engineering to deal with the extreme forces and potential instability. The first confirmed manned supersonic flight was on October 14, 1947, when Chuck Yeager piloted the Bell X-1 rocket plane at Mach 1.06. This historic achievement proved that the sound barrier could indeed be broken.

Supersonic Flight

Supersonic flight occurs when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, typically at Mach 1 to Mach 5. Aircraft designed for this purpose, like the Concorde or military jets such as the F-22 Raptor, face unique challenges:
  • Shockwaves: As an aircraft flies supersonically, shockwaves form around it, affecting aerodynamics and creating drag.
  • Heat: Friction with air molecules generates intense heat, necessitating special materials to withstand high temperatures.
  • Efficiency: Supersonic speeds consume immense amounts of fuel, which is why supersonic airliners were eventually retired due to cost concerns.
Supersonic flight allows for groundbreaking advancements, from faster travel to military capabilities. Engineers continue to innovate with the hope of developing economically viable, quieter supersonic commercial jets. To truly push the limits, we even have hypersonic flight (above Mach 5)—but that’s a whole other story!

...and because those photos are so fascinating, here is another one! Well done, NASA!

How does Schlieren Photography work?

Schlieren photography is a fascinating technique used to visualize changes in the density of transparent fluids like air. These density changes are often caused by variations in pressure, temperature, or shockwaves, such as those created by objects moving at supersonic speeds. Here's how it works:

Key Principles

  1. Light Refraction: When light passes through a medium with varying density, it bends (refracts) because the speed of light changes slightly depending on the medium's density.
  2. Optical Setup: Schlieren systems use a point light source, mirrors, and lenses to make these tiny changes in the light's direction visible.

How it Works

  1. Light Source: A bright point source, like a small LED or laser, emits light that passes through a transparent medium.
  2. Mirror or Lens: A concave mirror or lens focuses the light into parallel beams, which then travel through the area of interest—such as the air around a shockwave.
  3. Density Disturbances: If there are changes in air density (e.g., due to a shockwave), the light passing through those areas will bend slightly.
  4. Knife Edge or Filter: At the focal point, a small obstruction (such as a knife edge) blocks part of the light. This enhances the differences in light intensity, making the refracted light stand out.
  5. Resulting Image: A camera captures the distorted light pattern, revealing the density gradients in the medium. These gradients appear as light and dark regions, showcasing phenomena like shockwaves or heat flow.

And here one last one. Hell, NASA, you rock!

Applications

Schlieren photography is widely used in:
  • Aerodynamics: To study shockwaves, airflow, and heat plumes around high-speed aircraft or rockets.
  • Engineering: For visualizing heat and fluid flow in research and development.
  • Science and Medicine: To observe gas dynamics, such as the movement of heated air around objects.
The result? Stunning visualizations that reveal the invisible dynamics of air and fluids. It’s like giving eyes to phenomena we’d otherwise never see! Wait, did you say never?

...just sayin'

MiGFlug managed to show the moment when the MiG-29 broke the sound barrier during a fighter jet passenger flight? Without Schlieren photography, but normal video cameras! Look carefully, can you see it?

What is the sound barrier?

The "sound barrier" is the point at which an aircraft reaches the speed of sound, Mach 1 — roughly 1,225 km/h (761 mph) at sea level. Approaching it, aircraft meet a sharp rise in drag and turbulence that early engineers feared was an impenetrable barrier, until it was first broken in 1947.

What is schlieren photography?

Schlieren photography is a technique that makes differences in air density visible, allowing otherwise invisible shockwaves around fast-moving objects to be photographed. NASA used an advanced air-to-air version to capture supersonic shockwaves streaming off jets in flight.

How did NASA photograph supersonic shockwaves?

NASA used schlieren imaging to photograph two T-38 jets from the US Air Force Test Pilot School flying about 30 feet apart at supersonic speed. The result showed how the shockwaves from the two aircraft interact — data that helps engineers design quieter supersonic planes.

What is a sonic boom?

A sonic boom is the loud, thunder-like sound created when an aircraft travels faster than sound, as its shockwaves reach the ground. Reducing this boom is a major goal of modern supersonic research, which is why visualising shockwaves, as in NASA's images, matters so much.

Why do engineers want to see shockwaves?

Visualising shockwaves shows exactly how pressure waves form and merge around an aircraft, guiding designs that produce softer booms. This research could one day allow overland supersonic flight, reviving an ambition not seen since fast jets like the SR-71 Blackbird.

Which aircraft first broke the sound barrier?

The Bell X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager, became the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight on 14 October 1947. That milestone opened the supersonic age and led to research machines like the rocket-powered X-15.

How High Can the MiG-29 Fly?

MiG-29 at the Edge of Space.

What is the maximum altitude the MiG-29 can reach? Currently, the MiG-29 climbs to a guaranteed 17 km during High Altitude Flights. It often reaches considerably higher – 18 or even 19 km. Previously, altitudes above 20 km were achievable, but the current speed limitation of Mach 1.7 (down from Mach 1.9) reduces the maximum ceiling. For the best results, we recommend booking the Edge of Space flight during the colder months (October through April), with winter (November to February) being ideal for reaching peak altitude. Below you can find the full-length trailer of the MiGFlug MiG-29 Stratosphere Flight.

Maximum Altitude Reached by the MiG-29

The MiG-29’s service ceiling is 18,013 m (59,100 ft). During our stratosphere flights, when speeds of Mach 1.9 were still permitted, we were able to climb up to 23 km. How was this possible?

This photo by our videographer Artur shows the upper end of the current Edge of Space flight profile (click to enlarge). 1. Acceleration with full afterburner from 12,000 m at Mach 1.7–1.8 (equivalent to 2,222 km/h or 1,380 mph at sea level – at this altitude approximately 1,950 km/h or 1,210 mph) 2. Climb to target altitude 3. Peak altitude: 18,000 m 4. Descent – return from the stratosphere

Ballistic Flight Profile

In essence, the MiG-29 accelerates and climbs at maximum speed from 12 km, overshooting its service ceiling by several kilometres through sheer momentum. Unfortunately, the engines now require more conservative handling after a recent replacement by the Russian maintenance team. As a point of reference – the world altitude record for an air-breathing aircraft is held by Alexandr Fedotov, achieved in a specially modified Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 Foxbat (the E-266M). He reached 37,650 m (123,520 ft) on 31 August 1977. Until 2006, MiGFlug offered stratosphere flights in the MiG-25 Foxbat and was able to climb well above 25 km. Read more about that here.

How high can the MiG-29 fly?

On MiGFlug's High Altitude (Edge of Space) flights, the MiG-29 climbs to a guaranteed 17 km and often reaches 18 or even 19 km. In the past, altitudes above 20 km were possible, but a current speed limit of Mach 1.7, down from Mach 1.9, has lowered the practical ceiling.

What is the best time of year to book an Edge of Space flight?

The colder months, October through April, are best, with winter (November to February) ideal. Cold air lets the MiG-29's engines produce more thrust, so the jet climbs higher. The MiG-29 Fulcrum Edge of Space experience reaches its peak altitudes in winter conditions.

Can you see the curvature of the Earth from a MiG-29?

Yes. From around 17 to 19 km, near the edge of space, the sky turns dark and the curvature of the Earth becomes clearly visible. This is the signature view of the MiG-29 Edge of Space flight, a height few aircraft reach but still below the absolute altitude records set by specialised jets.

Why is the MiG-29 limited to Mach 1.7?

The MiG-29's top speed on these flights is currently capped at Mach 1.7, lower than the Mach 1.9 reached previously, because sustained higher speeds wore out the engines too quickly. Since speed and altitude are linked, this cap also slightly lowers the maximum height the jet can reach.

How does cold weather affect a jet's maximum altitude?

Cold air is denser and helps a jet engine generate more thrust, allowing the aircraft to climb higher. That is why MiG-29 Edge of Space flights reach their greatest altitudes in winter, and why operators recommend booking between November and February for the best chance at peak height.

MiG-29 Flight in Russia – Speed and Altitude

Edge of Space Flight - photo from the outside camera pioneered by MiGFlug and videographer Artur Sarkisyan

Edge of Space Flight – photo from the outside camera pioneered by MiGFlug and videographer Artur Sarkisyan

What top speed and maximum altitude can I reach during the MiG-29 flight? The MiG-29’s maximum speed is currently limited to Mach 1.7 during the Edge of Space flight, since the engines had to be replaced too frequently at higher speeds. This also limits the maximum altitude that can be reached. A second factor is air temperature – when the air is cold, the MiG-29 produces more thrust, allowing it to reach higher altitudes. This is why we recommend booking the Edge of Space flight in winter. These are the maximum figures reached during recent flights. Speed and altitude used to be higher (22 km, Mach 1.9). And don’t worry – we don’t push all customers to 9.2g, the record reached so far. Typically, customers experience around 7.5g, but this really depends on the individual and how well they handle g-forces. Higher altitude is limited to 12 km during aerobatic flight programs, since the customer only wears a standard g-suit. Above 12 km, a high-altitude flight suit is required. For comparison, more affordable rides such as the L-39 Albatros start around 2,500 euros, while the MiG-29 sits well above that.

Can you still fly a MiG-25 or Su-27 in Russia?

No. Flights in legendary jets like the MiG-25, MiG-31, and Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker are no longer available. The MiG-29 remains the fighter jet still bookable for civilians who want the Edge of Space experience.

What top speed can you reach on a MiG-29 flight?

The MiG-29's speed on Edge of Space flights is currently limited to Mach 1.7, down from the Mach 1.9 reached in the past, because the engines wore out too quickly at higher speeds. This cap also lowers the maximum altitude, which used to reach about 22 km.

How many Gs do you feel on a MiG-29 flight?

Customers typically experience around 7.5g on a MiG-29 flight, though it depends on the individual and how well they tolerate G-forces. The record reached so far is 9.2g, but passengers are not pushed that hard. A G-suit helps the body cope with the load.

How high can you go on a MiG-29 aerobatic flight?

Aerobatic MiG-29 programs are limited to 12 km altitude because the customer wears only a standard G-suit. Going higher requires a high-altitude flight suit, used on the dedicated Edge of Space flight that climbs to around 17 to 19 km.
